WASHINGTON, D.C. –Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) will chair a hearing titled, “Challenges and Opportunities for U.S.- China Cooperation on Climate Change” on Thursday, June 4, 2009, in room 419 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building at 10:00 a.m. This hearing will examine the interaction between China’s development goals and their commitments to support low-carbon growth. This hearing will also explore opportunities to build and strengthen the US-China relationship through research and collaboration on clean energy. The hearing follows the Senator’s recent visit to China where he held meetings with top Chinese officials to encourage cooperation between the United States and China to address global climate change.
Appearing before the Committee will be William Chandler, Senior Associate and Director of the Energy and Climate Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Elizabeth Economy, C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director for Asia Studies, Council on Foreign Relations; and Kenneth Lieberthal, Visiting Fellow in Foreign Policy, Brookings Institution.
