Alcatraz Hybrid Ferry Boat
Tuesday was an historic day for San Francisco Bay and the National Park Service when the first hybrid ferryboat was launched. Representatives from the National Park Service, Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office, NOAA and Save the Bay were on hand to introduce the Hornblower Hybrid, a wind, solar and diesel powered hybrid vessel that ferries visitors to Alcatraz Island.The engines reduce the amount of diesel fuel used, emissions and overall carbon footprint. The energy usage of the vessel can be monitored in order to select the most efficient power source. For example, when the boat is idle at the dock the engines will shut off and the motors will run off of energy stored in the battery banks.
The vessel also contains a number of eco-friendly materials. The carpeting contains recycled materials, the interior signage is printed on Plyboo, and the countertops are made from pieces of recycled vodka bottles. The lighting throughout the vessel is LED.
